Our Coffee Morning for MacMillan

We are taking part in MacMillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 27th September 2013 from 11am. Most of the retailers in Handpicked Hall will be doing something special on this day, but here is a highlight of what we’ve got planned. You can find out how to get to Handpicked Hall in the Grand Arcade, Leeds by clicking here.

We will be running a grand Our Handmade Collective raffle – one prize only – all proceeds go to MacMillan. Tickets cost £1 and you could be in with a chance of winning a hamper full of handmade goodies from our shop! Also we will be donating 10% from the purchases of selected items to MacMillan. So make sure you come upstairs to find Our Handmade Collective.

Upstairs in Handpicked Hall there will be cakes available for donations to MacMillan and delicious coffee will be supplied by Casa Colombiana with proceeds going to MacMillan. David and Marta of Casa Columbiana roast their own coffee beans to produce a quality coffee.

If tea is more your thing then Janine Martin of Just Grand! Vintage Tearoom will be serving vintage teas and she will be donating £1 for every scone sold on the day to this very worthwhile charity.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

picnic basketteddy

Yesterday if you went down to Our Handmade Collective you would have been sure of a big surprise! We had an indoor teddy bear’s picnic under the stunning new glass roof of Handpicked Hall, Grand Arcade, Leeds.

We organised the event with our friends and fellow Handpicked Hall stall-holders Thistlemist Farm. Jo and Brett of Thistlemist Farm made great little packed picnics which were free for anybody bringing their teddy bear along!

My children loved the little jam sandwiches with the crusts carefully removed, the teddy bear shaped crisps and cups of fresh strawberries.

There were also lots of free activities for the children to do after they had eaten their picnics. We had make your own pasta necklaces, colouring-in sheets, sticky mosaic shapes, face-painting and a great wordsearch with a prize if you finished it! We won a delicious cake pop made by Emma from Our Handmade Collective.

There was also a giant snakes and ladders game and inflatable connect 4 game. A lot of these activities are available throughout the school holidays as part of Our Summer of Craft. Later on Jo from Thistlemist Farm read stories with the children.

Lots of the children fell in love with Handpicked Hall’s Anthony Blackburn’s giant teddy bear and many of them were having their photos taken with him! Along with Claire from Our Handmade Collective!!

It was a lovely afternoon and all the children had lots of fun. We would like to thank Jo and Brett of Thistlemist Farm and several members of Our Handmade Collective who came along to help and to join in with the fun. But most of all we would like to thank all of  YOU that came along to join in our fun. We really appreciate your support.

Thank You Teacher Gifts

At Our Handmade Collective we have a special table full of great gift ideas for Thank You presents for your children’s teachers and teaching assistants.

Apple for the Teacher:

Little Shop of Lathers have a great range of affordable bath bombs that are suitable for teachers. Claire has made these gorgeous ‘Apple for the Teacher’ and also ‘Gold Star for the Teacher’ bath bombs.

Also keeping with the apple theme here is a trio with an Apple Strudel scented candle made by Michelle of Aunt Sally’s Upcycled Vintage Crockery company.

We have also made some lovely apple hanging decorations that would look lovely in any teacher’s home!

At Our Handmade Collective we have a wide range of handmade cards that would go with the gift you purchase.

For something a bit different, get your teacher a set of jams handmade by The Seasonal Larder, presented in their own hessian bag.

Instead of getting a bottle of wine like everybody else, get Miss her own hand-painted wine glass and free ‘Thank You’ charm (both from Handmade by Natalie).

This is a lovely trio of vintage china with a beautiful pin cushion inner, a great gift for a special teacher made by Kitsch-ina.

If you have got a lot of teachers or teaching assistants to buy gifts for then get them a little handmade thank you, like these boxed crochet rose brooches by Rose Cottage Crafts.

One of our newest makers Its Sew You has these lovely covered notebooks which would be great gifts for teachers.

But what if your child’s teacher is a Sir and not a Miss! No problem, we have a wide range of cufflinks and these fascinating keyrings  from SciArtImages. We also have these printed on mugs for Sir to have his coffee in!

So pop into Our Handmade Collective UPSTAIRS in Handpicked Hall, Grand Arcade, Leeds. We are open Wednesday-Saturday 11am-6pm and on Sunday 11am-4pm. See you then!

Meet Red Rat Designs

Time to meet more of our fabulous makers. Today we meet Alison Crowther of Red Rat Designs from Barnsley.

Alison makes Hand crafted clay tags and bespoke personalised cards, brooches & clips.

Red Rat Designs was born out of Alison’s love for craft, making her own cards for friends soon turned into making clay tags to add into gifts & use as keepsakes. As well as this she made fabric hair clips for her daughter & brooches to add to outfits.

Alison says “It gradually took over the spare room and is now flourishing as a small business & local outlet supplier. I like things to be different, not run of the mill so I love creating bespoke personalised items for my customers.”

Pop into Our Handmade Collective upstairs in Handpicked Hall, Grand Arcade, Leeds. We are there permanently and are open Wednesday to Sunday. Alison has some great ‘Thank You’ clay tags that you could add to your “Thank You Teacher” gifts.

The whole of Handpicked Hall is a treasure trove of loveliness with other makers selling their beautiful creations. I was very tempted to buy some fabric kits from our neighbour Love Me Sew.

I was also mesmerised by the stunning needlefelting of Miss Marmalade. Like us she is a permanent stallholder in Handpicked Hall and will be there every Weds-Sun. I fell in love with this colourful felted table which has pride of place inside the main Vicar Lane entrance to Handpicked Hall.

In our next blog post we’ll show you the fun activities we had this weekend. It was so popular that we plan to run a Kids Korner where your kids can play whilst you look through our wide range of gifts!

What is Handpicked Hall?

Our Handmade Collective is a collection of 21 local designer makers that have been brought together into one shop by co-founders Claire Riley and Natalie Entwistle. Our Handmade Collective is a Handmade Handpicked Total Gift Shopping Experience. The shop takes up a portion of the upstairs Art & Craft area, but there is so much more inside Handpicked Hall, including Fashion and Vintage and an amazing local food court.

The concept of Handpicked Hall was first introduced by Anthony Blackburn to Ripon. He has since opened a successful Handpicked Hall in Skipton (next to the bus station) and now in the Grand Arcade in Leeds. In their own words Handpicked Hall’s philosophy is simple,

  • To give local independent businesses the chance to trade in high profile town and city centre locations at affordable rates.
  • To provide a “first-step” for start-up businesses, giving them the chance to sell and promote their products on the high street, before perhaps investing in a shop of their own.
  • With an unique opportunity to occupy premium retail space  in a high profile location with easy access, regular footfall.

It is a great opportunity for fledgling businesses to come together under one supportive umbrella. It also provides the customer with great convenience as there is a wide variety of products available for them to buy without having to trail around boutiques, galleries and fairs. The Leeds List recently wrote about the opening of Handpicked Hall on their website and featured this great photograph by Ollievision Photography of us upstairs in Our Handmade Collective.

I hope you visit soon and see for yourself how great Handpicked Hall, Grand Arcade, Leeds is. Don’t forget to pop upstairs (there is a lift) to see us in Our Handmade Collective, the Opening Hours are below.
